The best part of being a biologist is learning about, and interacting with, the natural world. Field work is an integral component of my research and it has brought me to amazing places with fascinating wildlife.
Saint Lucia (2022)
A field course I co-directed with David Griffing (Hartwick College) for Hartwick College students. Students learned about the geology and natural history of St. Lucia and the Caribbean, broadly. In addition to the course, I collected genetic and natural history specimen samples of invasive St. Lucian geckos. This work was done with the help of Stephen Lesmond and Pius Haynes from the St. Lucian Dept. of Forestry.
Saint Croix, US Virgin Islands (2021)
Field work conducted with Dr. Stuart Nielsen (University of Florida) and Shannon Keating (Marquette University). During this work, we collected important genetic and morphological samples of Saint Croix geckos for a range of projects concerning gecko evolution.
Wisconsin, USA (2020)
Field work conducted with Shannon Keating (Marquette University) to collect data on breeding salamanders for Dr. Sean Giery (Penn State). Doing fieldwork in our backyard was not typical but it was great to investigate flora and fauna of Wisconsin.
Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands (2019)
Field work conducted with Dr. Stuart Nielsen (University of Florida). During this work, we collected important genetic samples of Cayman Island geckos for gecko evolution and genomics projects.
Babuyan Islands, Philippines (2018)
Field work conducted with Dr. Tony Gamble (Marquette University), Dr. Cameron Siler (University of Oklahoma), Dr. Matthew Heinicke (University of Michigan, Dearborn), Dr. Katrina Menard (Sam Noble Museum), and various OU/UM Dearborn students. During this work, we collected important voucher specimens and genetic samples of reptiles, amphibians, and arthropods for the Sam Noble Museum. We also collected functional morphology data on gecko parachuting.
Jamaica (2016)
Field work conducted with Jon DeBoer (Villanova University). During this work, we collected important voucher specimens and genetic samples of sphaerodactylid geckos for my Master's thesis to study gecko evolution and development.
Great Inagua, Bahamas (2015)
During this solo trip, I collected important voucher specimens and genetic samples of sphaerodactylid geckos for my Master's thesis to study gecko evolution and development.
Costa Rica (2014)
Part of a course at Hartwick College led by Drs. Stanley Sessions and Peter Fauth, fellow undergraduates and I conducted surveys of amphibian diversity and behavioral observations of diurnal lizards.
San Salvador, Bahamas (2013)
Part of a course at Hartwick College led by Drs. Mark Kuhlmann and Doug Hamilton, fellow undergraduates and I conducted reef fish surveys around the many pristine reefs of San Salvador.
Upstate New York, USA (2012–2014)
Field work conducted with Dr. Stanley Sessions and other Sessions Lab members to collect ranid frogs and salamanders for undergraduate research.
